Today is given more and more emphasis to the functional requirements of pavement during service. Therefore, the design and management of functional characteristics of pavements must be carefully planned and addressed to provide safe and appropriate service to users over their entire service life. Such requirements include safe skid resistance, texture, adequate surface and subsurface drainage, riding quality, acceptable levels of tire-pavement noise, low rolling resistance, and also other new functionalities provided by cutting edge technologies and required by new mobility paradigms.
The “International Symposium Pavement Functional Design and Management – PFDM Symposium” serves as a platform to reach out the international pavement engineering community. The first PFDM Symposium took place at the University of Chang’an, Xi’an, China, 24 – 26 October 2019. The venue of the second Symposium will be at the University of Minho, Guimarães, Portugal, 27th to 29nd April 2023.
